Embark on the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain Trek, a one-day alternative that presents a less trodden but equally stunning path through one of Peru’s most vibrant landscapes. Unlike the more famous Vinicunca, which draws large crowds daily, the Palcoyo area offers a serene and more accessible hiking experience, showcasing a series of multicolored mountains and expansive scenic views with fewer visitors and less strenuous trails.

HIGHLIGHTS

Relax on a scenic drive through the beautiful Andean countryside. This drive provides a wonderful opportunity to observe local wildlife and get a glimpse of rural Andean life.

The route passes through small villages and alongside fields dotted with grazing llamas and alpacas, offering a chance to observe these charming Andean camelids in their natural environment.

Explore the Rainbow Mountains, During your trek you will come across not one but several Rainbow Mountains, each with streaks of vibrant colour.

Cultural interaction, The trek also provides an opportunity to meet local communities. Many of the area’s inhabitants maintain traditional lifestyles, including the herding of llamas and alpacas.

  • Travel insurance: Participants are generally responsible for their own travel insurance. It's important to have insurance for trekking at altitude and in case of any unexpected incidents.
  • Alcoholic beverages: If meals are included, they usually do not include alcoholic beverages, which must be purchased separately.
  • Tips for guides and staff: Gratuities for guides, drivers and other staff are not included in the tour price. Tipping is optional but appreciated for good service.

Recommended to carry

  • Layered clothing: The weather can change quickly in the mountains, so you need to wear layers that you can add or remove as needed. This should include a moisture-wicking base layer, an insulating layer and a waterproof outer layer
  • Sun protection: The sun at high altitudes can be intense. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses and a wide-brimmed hat to protect against UV rays.
  • Warm hat and gloves: Temperatures can drop, especially in the early morning or on the summit, so these are essential to keep warm.
  • Waterproof walking boots: Durable footwear with good ankle support and grip will help you to navigate the varied terrain.
  • Rain Gear: A rain jacket and rain cover for your backpack will protect you and your belongings from sudden downpours.
  • Camera or smartphone: Capture the stunning scenery and vibrant colours of the mountain. Make sure your devices are fully charged.
  • Drinking water: Staying hydrated is essential, especially at high altitude. Carry at least 2 litres of water or a Camelbak hydration bladder.
  • Personal first Aid Kit: take altitude sickness medication, painkillers, blister plasters and any personal medication.
  • High-energy snacks: Energy bars, nuts, fruit or chocolate can help maintain your energy levels during the walk.
  • Backpack: A comfortable, lightweight rucksack to carry your essentials, preferably with rain protection.
  • Reusable water bottle or thermos: To avoid littering and to keep your water or drinks at the desired temperature.
Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Cusipata- Palcoyo- Cusco

Early in the morning at 4:00 a.m, your guide will come to your hotel to pick you up. You will then board our private vehicle for a 2 hour drive to the village of Cusipata. 

Stop for a delicious breakfast buffet prepared by local chefs at the local restaurant, continue for 1 hour more towards the Combapata district where you will find the Bridge of Checacupe located at 3,441 m.a.s.l. This is a hanging bridge built by the Quechas natives to favour the Inca Empire. from here to the Foothills of the Ausangate Mountain (6,300 m).

Before you start walking, our guide gives us a short briefing. You will then perform a ceremony for the God “Apus” – local protective deities, usually represented by a mountain or lake. Our trek starts at an altitude of 4,800 m.a.s.l.

A 30 minute walk takes you to the first viewpoint at 4,900 metres. From there you can see the colourful Palcoyo mountain range with its 3 peaks. You will also be able to see the immense Ausangate, the most important God “Apu” in the Cusco region. Before arriving at our destination you will be able to admire beautiful rock formations. Upon arrival, you will have one hour at the site to admire the stunning scenery.

You then walk back the same way to where you left the vehicle. From there you will go to Cusipata, where you will have a delicious Andean buffet lunch. Finally you will return to the city of Cusco, arriving at around 4pm.

The Palcoyo Mountain Range tour was an extraordinary experience that exceeded all expectations. Our day began bright and early with a prompt pickup from our hotel in Cusco at 6 am. The scenic drive to Cusipata village was filled with anticipation, and upon arrival, we were treated to a delicious buffet breakfast at the charming restaurant “La Montana.”

After breakfast, we continued our journey to the Combapata District, where we marveled at the ancient Checacupe Bridge, a testament to the ingenuity of the Quechua natives. Our hike commenced with a short briefing from our knowledgeable guide, followed by a ceremony to honor the local guardian deities, the “Apus.”

The hike to the first viewpoint, situated at 4,900 meters above sea level, offered breathtaking panoramic views of the colorful Palcoyo mountain range and the majestic Mt. Ausangate. Along the way, we were captivated by the unique rock formations that adorned the landscape.
