The Rainbow Mountains (traditionally known as Palcoyo or Vinicunca’s sister) are considered the alternative rainbow mountain and are one of Peru’s newest tourist adventures and natural attractions. Located 110 kilometers from the city of Cusco, it sits at an altitude of 4900 meters above sea level. It is a natural formation discovered by nature itself, dyed with colors including red, purple, green, yellow, pink, and other shades. This tourist attraction has been famous since 2017, and today it is not crowded by many travelers, making it ideal for those who wish to be in less-traveled places and recharge their energy surrounded by the tranquility of this mountain.
You’ll be picked up from your respective hotel at 4:00 am. From there, we’ll travel to the town of Cusipata (a 2-hour journey), where we’ll stop to enjoy a typical breakfast from our region of Cusco. After recharging our energy, we’ll continue traveling for another hour to the district of Comba Pata, where we’ll find the Checacupe Bridge (3441 meters above sea level), a suspension bridge made of straw by the Quechua natives to facilitate access to the Inca Empire, as well as the colonial bridge made of stone. Next, we’ll travel to the starting point of the hike. Upon arrival, we’ll immediately be greeted by the sight of colorful mountains and the stone forest, consisting of rocky formations forming a geological labyrinth.
The hike takes approximately 45 minutes from the beginning to the viewpoint, with an elevation gain from 4800 meters above sea level to 4900 meters above sea level. After enjoying the guided tour and paying homage to our guardian deities “Apus”, especially the imposing Ausangate, considered the guardian deity of the city of Cusco, we’ll spend over an hour exploring before returning to the restaurant for lunch and finally heading back to Cusco. We’ll arrive in the city of Cusco between 4:00 pm and 5:00 pm.
The hike to the viewpoint is of moderate difficulty. It is a short hike of approximately 45 minutes with relatively flat terrain but at a high elevation. It is recommended to be in good physical condition to fully enjoy the experience.
The weather in the region can vary, but it is generally cool in the morning and warm during the day. It is recommended to dress in layers and bring sunscreen, as the sun can be intense at high altitudes.
It is recommended to bring comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen, a hat or cap, and a light jacket to protect against the wind. Additionally, it is important to carry water to stay hydrated during the hike.
We will spend approximately one hour at the viewpoint, where we will enjoy stunning views of the rainbow-colored mountains and the stone forest. Our guide will provide information about the history and culture of the region, as well as the significance of the apus and the Ausangate.
