Day 1Cusco – Pillcopata

Your adventure begins with an early departure from Cusco towards the archaeological wonders of Ninamarca’s “Chullpas” tombs. After exploring these ancient burial sites, the journey continues to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo. From here, ascend to the Acjanacu pass, the gateway to the Cultural Zone of the Manu Biosphere Reserve.

The cloud forest in this region, thriving at altitudes between 2,000 and 3,500 meters, is a haven for endemic species such as the iconic Cock of the Rock and the elusive Spectacled Bear. Overnight at the enchanting Orquídeas de San Pedro Lodge, nestled amidst lush orchids and ancient tree ferns.

Day 2Pillcopata – Amazon Lodge

Rise early to witness the Cock of the Rock’s vibrant mating display at a nearby lek. After breakfast, travel through picturesque canyons to Pilcopata, then proceed to Atalaya Port where a boat ride takes you to Erika Lodge in our private reserve. This area marks the transitional zone between the high and low jungle, featuring an intricate trail system ripe for exploration. Overnight at Erika Lodge, where the jungle’s symphony serenades you.

Day 3Amazon Lodge – Blanquillo

Depart Erika Lodge by canoe, gliding down the Alto Madre de Dios River to Boca Manu Village, keeping an eye out for river and forest-edge bird species. After a refreshing stop in Boca Manu, continue to Blanquillo for overnight. An optional nocturnal walk this evening offers insights into the forest’s mysterious nightlife.

Day 4Blanquillo -Boca Manu

Venture out before dawn to a nearby Parrot Lick to observe parrots and macaws feasting on the mineral-rich clay—an exquisite natural spectacle. After breakfast and a visit to the Park Rangers Headquarters at Limonal, navigate up the Manu River to Salvador Lake, entering the untouched heart of the reserve. The diversity of wildlife here is astonishing. Overnight at our base safari camp near Salvador Lake.

Day 5Boca Manu – Salvador

Explore Salvador Lake by catamaran in the morning, seeking out Giant Otters, caimans, and diverse birdlife. After lunch, hike to Otorongo Lake and climb its observation tower for panoramic views and more wildlife spotting opportunities. Return to Salvador Lake for a nocturnal wildlife watch from the catamaran.

Day 6Salvador – Otorongo

Embark on a final morning walk around Salvador Lake, capturing any last moments in this rich ecosystem. Begin your descent down the Manu River, filled with vivid memories and photographs. Return to Boca Manu Village, then journey down the Madre de Dios River to Boca Lodge for your last night in the jungle. Another opportunity for a night walk may reveal more nocturnal mysteries.

Day 7Salvador

Start your return journey up the Alto Madre de Dios River. Depending on river conditions and weather, you may camp on a beach in the Cultural Zone or make it back to Erika Lodge for a final night in the lush embrace of the rainforest.

Day 8Cusco

Depart early for Atalaya, where your bus awaits to take you back to Cusco. Arrive late at night or early the next morning, marking the end of your unforgettable expedition through the heart of Manu. This journey leaves you with profound insights and a deep appreciation for the vibrant ecosystems of the Amazon.

I recently had the most incredible journey through the Manu Biosphere Reserve, starting from Cusco and heading towards Pillcopata. The early morning departure allowed us to explore the ancient “Chullpas” tombs of Ninamarca, followed by a visit to the charming colonial town of Paucartambo. Ascending to the Acjanacu pass and entering the Cultural Zone, we marveled at the diverse cloud forest, home to the vibrant Cock of the Rock and the elusive Spectacled Bear. The overnight stay at Orquídeas de San Pedro Lodge was enchanting, surrounded by lush orchids and ancient tree ferns.

The adventure continued with early wildlife watching, including the Cock of the Rock’s mating display, and an exciting boat ride to Erika Lodge in a private reserve. We explored intricate jungle trails and enjoyed the serenade of the jungle at night. The journey down the Alto Madre de Dios River to Blanquillo was filled with bird sightings and a magical nocturnal walk.
