The Inca Trail to Machu Picchu is one of the most popular trekking routes in South America. It is frequented by adventurers from around the world who come to visit Peru.

You will embark on stunning mountain landscapes, inter-Andean valleys, mysterious archaeological complexes, and the stone city of Machu Picchu.

The Inca Trail is a pilgrimage to a sacred city and is also considered a hike that can spiritually change your life.

Recommended to carry

  • Original passport: (We can not accept a copy of this document): Your passport must be valid for at least six months after the travel dates to Peru.
  • student card: (If you booked as a student): The original student card must be issued by the university and is valid for students up to the age of 25. It must contain the following: information about the university, the student's personal information, a photo of the student, and a valid date no later than December 31 of the year of travel.
  • Hiking boots: The short Inca Trail is highly recommended. Bring a pair of well worn, comfortable shoes.
  • walking poles: You should only take these on the first day of the Inca Trail. You cannot take them into Machu Picchu because of government rules.
  • Waterproof jacket/poncho for rain: Whatever the season, always take a rain jacket and a poncho. Machu Picchu is in the cloud forest where the weather is often unstable.
  • Comfortable shirts and pants.
  • Flashlight with spare batteries.
  • Suggested extra contribution.
  • Hat or cap: Choose a hat or cap that's comfortable, lightweight and easy to pack and store. Avoid bringing bulky items.
  • Sunglasses: Bring comfortable sunglasses suitable for hiking with good UV protection.

  • When you take the Short Inca Trail to Machu Picchu, remember that the porters will not help you carry your belongings, so you should pack lightly. We recommend you bring a good-quality, light, comfortable daypack.If you need a personal porter, you can ask for one when you book, but it will cost extra. We don't really recommend it though, as we can send some of your stuff to the hotel for free by train if you ask us in advance. Day 1Cusco - Km 104 – Wiñay Wayna - Aguas Calientes

Colletion from your hotel at 4:00 am, then take you to the Ollantaytambo train station (1 hour and 30 minutes journey). You will board the train that will take you to Km 104, the starting point of the trek. Upon disembarking, the guide will accompany you to the Chachabamba checkpoint where we will register (please bring your original passport).

We will then walk 5 minutes to the first archaeological complex of Chachabamba for a guided tour. Afterward, we ascend along the Inca Trail towards the second archaeological complex of Wiñay Wayna (2900 meters above sea level). Along the way, we will admire beautiful waterfalls and views of the Sacred Valley of the Incas.

After visiting Wiñay Wayna, we proceed to the Wiñay Wayna checkpoint where we stop for lunch (box lunch). Later, we hike for approximately 2 hours until we reach Inti Punku (Sun Gate), from where we will observe the sunset over the Inca citadel of Machu Picchu.

After taking a group photo and enjoying the panoramic views, we descend to the Ruinas Bridge where we camp in tents and have dinner.

 

Day 2Aguas Calientes - Machu Picchu – Cusco

After a good breakfast, we hike for 1 hour to the Machu Picchu Inca citadel. Upon arrival, we register and then begin the guided tour of Machu Picchu. During the guided tour, our guide will explain the most important sectors of the stone city of Machu Picchu, including agricultural terraces, temples, ceremonial water fountains, plazas, and various types of constructions.

The guided tour takes approximately 2-3 hours. For those adventurers who have pre-booked the Wayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain, you will climb at your assigned time (1 hour up and 1 hour down). After enjoying the visit to Machu Picchu, you will return to the town of Aguas Calientes to take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then the bus back to Cusco.

The two-day Inca Trail trek was an absolutely amazing experience. From the flawless organization to the stunning beauty of Wiñay Wayna and Machu Picchu, every moment was magical. Camping near Machu Picchu and seeing the citadel at sunrise was a dream come true. Our guide was exceptional and very knowledgeable about Inca history and culture.
