You will get to know the natural areas of the White City of Arequipa, the Chili River, and the Colca Canyon. You will experience descending into the second deepest canyon in the world. This hike is an adventure that combines archaeological, colonial, urban, natural, and cultural experiences, allowing you to connect with nature and making your vacation unique. This hike, offered by Arequipa, is the least physically demanding.

  • The climate of Arequipa and its tourist attractions such as: Colca, Majes and Cotahuasi its climate are favorable throughout the year with rainy intervals in January and February so it does not hinder the visits.
  • During the rainy months of January and February, tours are preferably conducted in the mornings from 09:00 am to 13:00 pm.
Itinerary

Day 1Arequipa – Cruz del Condor – Cabanaconde – San Juan de Chuccho

Early in the morning, we will pick you up from your hotel, then travel to the town of Chivay (a 3-hour and 30-minute journey). Later, we will arrive in the town of Yanque where we will enjoy a buffet breakfast. Then, we will continue traveling for 2 more hours until we reach Cruz del Condor. Once there, we will explore for 1 hour to appreciate the flight of the condors and the depth of the Colca Canyon (3207 m.a.s.l.).

After enjoying this, we will continue traveling to the town of Cabanaconde where we will have lunch. Later, we will descend the canyon, walking for 3 hours and 30 minutes until we reach the Colca River where we will rest, cross the hanging bridge, and head to the town of San Juan de Chuccho, where we will dine and spend the night in refuges (bungalows).

 

Day 2San Juan de Chuccho – Oasis

After a good breakfast, we will restart the hike for approximately 3 hours. During the hike, we will visit different towns such as Cosñihua and Malata with its site museum, where we will share with the local inhabitants their customs, experiences, and stories with a guided visit about the flora (medicinal plants) and fauna.

At noon, we will arrive at the Oasis, a charming place where we will enjoy its pools surrounded by palm trees connected to nature. Here we will have the afternoon free to relax and appreciate the landscapes. Later, we will have dinner and rest in refuges (adobe bungalows).

Day 3Oasis – Cabanaconde – Chivay – Arequipa

05:00 a.m.: We will ascend the canyon, walking for 3 hours and 30 minutes until we reach the town of Cabanaconde where we will have breakfast. Later, we will take the return vehicle to the city of Chivay. During the trip, we will stop at attractive places such as the town of Maca and natural viewpoints where we will observe pre-Inca terraces in the valley.

At noon, we will arrive in the town of Chivay where we will have lunch and have approximately 1 hour to immerse ourselves in the La Calera thermal baths. Later, we will return to the city of Arequipa, making tourist stops at the national reserve (viewpoint of the volcanoes at 4910 m.a.s.l. and llamas and vicuñas that shine in the area).

This hike through the Colca Canyon exceeded all my expectations. From the thrilling sight of condors at Cruz del Condor to the tranquility of the Oasis, every moment was spectacular. Interacting with the locals in the small villages was an enriching experience, and the scenery was simply breathtaking. A highly recommended tour for any adventure and nature lover.
