Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Mollepata – Challacancha – Soraypampa

Early Departure: Our journey begins with an early pickup from your hotel between 04:30 to 05:00 AM, heading towards Mollepata. After a brief stop for breakfast (not included), we continue for a 1-hour drive to Challacancha (3,380 meters), setting the stage for our trek.

Trek to Soraypampa: From Challacancha, a 2-hour hike leads us to Soraypampa (3,900 meters), our lunch spot and first campsite, arriving around 1:30 PM. After lunch, embark on a 1 hour and 20-minute hike up to the stunning Humantay Lake (4,220 meters), with 45 minutes to descend back to Soraypampa.

Evening Relaxation: Enjoy tea time followed by dinner and settle in for the night in comfortable huts at Soraypampa.

  • Walking Time: 4 – 5 hours

Day 2Soraypampa – Salkantay Pass – Colpapampa

Morning Ritual: Wake up to coca tea served outside your hut, followed by breakfast.

Ascent to Salkantay Pass: Begin the day’s trek towards the majestic Salkantay Mountain, culminating at the Salkantay Pass (4,600 meters). Enjoy snacks while soaking in the history and breathtaking views of the surrounding peaks.

Descent to Colpapampa: After the pass, descend for 2 hours to our lunch spot, then continue trekking down to Colpapampa (2,900 meters), today’s campsite.

  • Walking Time: 9 -10 hours

Day 3Colpapampa – La Playa Sayhuyaco – Santa Teresa – Lucmabamba

Journey to the Jungle: Begin with a 4-hour downhill walk to La Playa Sayhuyaco, traversing through the high jungle with a chance to spot Peru’s national bird, the Andean cock-of-the-rock.

Transfer to Lucmabamba: After lunch at La Playa, take a 45-minute bus ride to our camp near Lucmabamba. Optionally, visit Cocalmayo’s thermal baths in Santa Teresa for some relaxation (extra cost).

  • Accommodation: Camping (tents)
  • Walking Time: 5 to 6 hours

Day 4Lucmabamba - Santa Teresa – Hidrolectric – Aguas Calientes – Pueblo

Morning Choices: Opt for a trek from Lucmabamba to Aguas Calientes via the Llaqtapata ruins, covering 18 km, or choose a morning zip line adventure in Santa Teresa (at extra cost) followed by a 10 km walk.

Afternoon Trek to Aguas Calientes: Regardless of the morning activity, reunite for lunch at Hydroelectric. Afterward, embark on a scenic 3-hour walk along the train tracks to Aguas Calientes, where you will check into a hostel and enjoy dinner.

Day 5Aguas Calientes Pueblo – Machu Picchu – Cusco

Early Ascent to Machu Picchu: Depart early for the bus ride up to Machu Picchu, arriving in time to witness the spectacular sunrise over the ancient city.

Guided Tour of Machu Picchu: Explore the iconic Inca citadel through a guided tour, learning about its historical significance, architecture, and mysteries.

Free Time and Return to Cusco: After the tour, enjoy some free time to explore further or relax. In the afternoon, descend to Aguas Calientes to board the train back to Ollantaytambo. From there, a bus will take you back to Cusco, marking the end of an unforgettable adventure.

I had an unforgettable experience on this trek to Machu Picchu! From the early morning start in Cusco to the stunning hike up to Soraypampa and the awe-inspiring views at Humantay Lake, every moment was well-planned and enjoyable. The accommodations in comfortable huts added a nice touch of comfort after a day of hiking.

The trek over the Salkantay Pass was a highlight, offering breathtaking views and a sense of achievement. The journey through the jungle to La Playa and Santa Teresa, with the optional zip line adventure, added variety and excitement. The final ascent to Machu Picchu was the perfect ending to this adventure, with a detailed guided tour that brought the ancient city to life.
